What they say

Sioux Bear Hunt

What makes this hunt different from any other black bear hunt?

Private lakeshore lodge accommodations for up to eight hunters.

Seven day hunt with only one party per week.

Maximum of three hunt parties per year in the area.

Huge leased area in prime black bear country with new forestry roads opening up new territory every year.

Choice of sites baited well before the season for your party only.

No competition from other outfitters.

Great fishing included in the price.

We've operated a hunt north of Sioux Lookout for the past 15 years from our hunt lodge on Stranger Lake in an area which continues to have new logging roads opening up territory for exceptional hunt opportunties.

Ninety per cent of our guests are bowhunters and repeat business has meant we haven't had to do any magazine or show marketing to fill the two weeks we've set up for a hunt beginning the last week of August and through the first week of September.

With a limit on the number of hunters, we've been able to provide a high quality hunt which can't be beat. Our repeat hunters over the years can attest to that.

This is a hunt in a remote, yet road accessed area. Some of the road network we use is "bush road" and we recommend that at least one of your party's vehicles be a truck.

We provide personal introduction to this area which has also been our trapline area for many years. We know it well!

Along with me personally, we have another experienced trapper working the baits in preparation for your hunt. When you arrive, we get you set up on the bait which we feel will provide prime opportunity for a successful hunt.
A major part of the hunt is the preparation with baiting and this is the part we especially enjoy. It's our chance to be out in the area where we trap. We get to see new areas opening up with logging roads and continually set baits to test new areas.

We start baiting mid summer. We have sites which have been proven locations for years as they are strategic to bear movement which is affected by the blueberry crops surrounding the hunt area. The bears don't forget where they got fed the year before and with multiple baited sites, many of which don't get used each year, bears are coming into the baits for weeks before you arrive. Each year when we start the baits it's always amazing that within three days the bears have cleaned out the pails!!! As well, we found that using grease pads around the bait means new bears are being "tracked into" the area from surrounding areas.

The clearings from forestry activity in the last 15 years have become huge blueberry plantations attracting bears from the virgin forests to the north of Sioux Lookout and you'll see the evidence of this bear movement with piles of scat along the bush roads leading to the baited sites.

These are not "garbage dump bears" and the hunt from tree stands will be the rush of a lifetime for you.

Bowhunters who've been with us can attest to the adrenaline when Blacky comes in to the bait!!! We like to put you on baits with signs of multiple bears and, of course, on the baits with potential for trophy kills.

With multiple baits out (up to 20 bait areas with generally four or five hunters per week) we've got flexibility to watch what's coming in and choose the best location for your stand.

No permanent stands means we're not committed to putting hunters in specific locations just because the stand is there. You can't control which bear is taking the bait, so if a sow and cub do start hitting a bait, we move!!!! And if, while you're on a bait, a smaller bear is dominating the buckets, we can provide another bait for you to hunt!!!

Your party is the only party we're interested in making sure has a successful hunt. There's no other group that week and repeat business and references are what we've built our success on.

While you're with us, your group is number one!! You can talk to hunters who've recently been in camp and they can attest to that.

Through the week we have a chance to look at other baits. If possible, we recommend your group bring a couple extra stands.

Generally the guys will hunt later in the afternoon with time to relax at the lodge, have a sauna or steam bath by the lake, or take the boat out for some walleye and northern fishing on Stranger Lake.

There are no commercial camps on Stranger so you'll see few boats and get to experience Canada's remote north as few get the opportunity to do.

You've got your bear. Back at camp we assist in the skinning and take the hide and meat back to our home base in Sioux Lookout for freezing.

Some of the past hunters comments to the hunt might give you an idea of the type of hunt you'll have the chance to experience with us.

With only two weeks available each year, we suggest booking well in advance.

The cost: $1200 per hunter
